INDIANAPOLIS - Seniors Caitlin Young, Demi Georgakopoulos, Abbey Bates and Caryn Kimmel helped lead Oakland (2-17, 1-7) to a 7-0 win over Western Illinois (1-15, 0-7), after earlier falling, 6-0, to Oral Roberts (10-5, 7-0) on Friday at Pine Ridge Racquet Club.
"Everyone came out ready to play today and played great," said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "It was a nice way to end the season with everyone getting wins."
The Golden Grizzlies claimed the doubles point with an 8-1 win by Kimmel and Grace Keating at No. 2 double, after WIU had forfeited No. 3 singles.
Oakland followed that up with victories at all six singles positions. Young won her match 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Keating was a winner, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Both Georgakopoulos and Brittany Baxter won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively.
Western Illinois forfeited No. 6 singles to Abbey Bates and in the final match of the day Kimmel won 10-6 in a super-set tiebreaker to cement a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory at No. 5 singles.
In the earlier match Oral Roberts blanked OU 6-0. The match started with singles play and ORU won each match in straight sets. The Golden Eagles wrapped up The Summit League regular-season title with the victory.
"Oral Roberts is the toughest team in the league," said Redshaw. "We had some moments of greatness against them, but were unable to sustain enough good points to win any of the matches."
Friday's match against WIU was the final match of the year for the Golden Grizzlies.
