ROCHESTER, Mich. - Meghan Bray had a team-high 24 kills and added 14 digs, while Alli Kirk earned a match-high 33 digs as the Gold Team won a five-set match over the Black Team during Oakland volleyball's annual Black and Gold Scrimmage in the Athletics Center O'rena Saturday afternoon. The Gold Team won with set scores of 13-25, 25-20, 25-23, 16-25 and 15-12.
"We are excited about the way both teams played today," said assistant coach Eric Lindstrom. "I think the Black Team was very steady the entire match and the Gold Team was really on when they were good and controlled their low points well."
For the Black Team, Brittany Holbrook led the way with 26 kills and an impressive .431 hitting percentage and Alissa Valentine recorded 46 assists and 26 digs. Taylor Humm added 15 kills and 16 digs, while Mary Grassano earned 22 digs.
The final set was dominated early by the Gold Team as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead, forcing three hitting errors. The Black Team would cut the lead to 10-7 after two straight kills and a service ace by Amanda Baker, but hitting errors by the Black squad would give the Gold Team the final 15-12 set win and the match.
The opening set was controlled by the Black Team as they had 12 kills and only one hitting error in the set, led by Holbrook with five kills. The second set was tight towards the end as the Gold squad led 20-19. After a Gold timeout, Bray had two kills and Taylor Hargraves had two service aces to even the match with a 25-20 set win.
The third set was a back and forth affair, as both teams were tied on eight different occasions during the game. The Gold Team pulled out a 25-23 win as Briggite Fotlz earned a kill and Allia Knight had a service ace with the scored tied 23-23 to end the set. Ciara Schultz had four kills and nine assists during the set, while Knight added four kills. The Black team tied the match at 2-2 after controlling the fourth set for a 25-16 win. The Black squad earned 15 kills and only one error in the game led by Humm with six kills while Valentine added 12 assists and 11 digs.
The Oakland volleyball team will officially open the season on Aug. 24 at the Kansas State Tournament in Manhattan, Kan. as they take on Oregon State at 6 p.m. ET. The Golden Grizzlies will also take on Kansas State, who finished ranked in the top-25 last season, and UC-Irvine on Aug. 25.
