ROCHESTER, Mich. - Meghan Bray had 21 kills and 13 digs, while Alli Kirk recorded 30 digs, as the Oakland volleyball team (3-3) came back from two sets down to beat Iowa (5-2) in five sets and win its second straight Golden Grizzlies Invitational Saturday night inside the Athletics Center O'rena. Oakland won with set scores of 22-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-22 and 15-13.
"Iowa is a great program with a strong reputation coming from the Big Ten and this ranks as one of the best wins on our home floor," said head coach Rob Beam. "This is one of those launching pad wins and a very significant one for the program."
Brittany Holbrook was named the Tournament MVP as she added 14 kills and four blocks in the match. Taylor Humm earned her second double-double of the weekend with 20 kills and 10 digs while Ciara Schultz led the Golden Grizzlies with 33 assists. Bray and Humm were also named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.
The final set was a seesaw battle as neither team could take control as both teams were tied at 9-9. OU grabbed the momentum as Bray earned three kills to make the score 13-10 and held on as Iowa committed an attack error for the 15-13 fifth set victory and to win the tournament.
To open the game, the Golden Grizzlies and the Hawkeyes were locked in a tight set as both teams combined for 20 ties in the set. Humm led OU with six kills in the opening set but Iowa earned 17 kills and had a .417 hitting percentage and won the final three points to win 25-22. In the second set, Iowa took control early as they went on a nine-point run to take a 14-3 lead. IU forced nine OU hitting errors in the set and led by as many as 14 in the set to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 set win.
Oakland fought back in the third set as Bray and Humm both earned six kills to lead the team as they combined for 19 in the set. Kirk earned eight digs and helped OU with a five-point run to take a 13-8 as they used the momentum to lead by as many nine in the set to win 25-16. The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to an early fourth set lead, winning seven out of the first nine points led by three kills by Humm. OU extended the lead to 16-7 but the Hawkeyes came back to close the lead to 23-20, but two kills by Bray sent the game to the fifth and deciding set.
Oakland will compete next week at Central Michigan on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena and at the Cleveland State Invitational on Sept.7-8 against the Vikings, Buffalo and Eastern Kentucky at Woodling Gymnasium.
