MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Alli Kirk had a team-high 21 digs and Meghan Bray earned 18 kills as the Oakland volleyball team (3-4) fell to Central Michigan (4-3) in four sets at McGuirk Arena Tuesday night. The Golden Grizzlies lost with set scores of 18-25, 23-25, 32-30 and 12-25.
"Tonight we did not play as cleanly as necessary to beat a physical team like Central Michigan," said head coach Rob Beam. "We needed to execute the details of our system, as well as play with more passion to get a win on the road."
In the third set, Oakland fell behind 20-15 but tied the set at 24-24 behind five kills by the front line. Both teams fought back and forth from there, but OU won as they forced two Chippewa attack errors to push the match to a fourth set with a 32-30 win.
Central Michigan jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, taking an 11-6 lead with six kills. The Golden Grizzlies tied the match at 18-18 but CMU went on a seven-point run as Kaitlyn McIntyre earned the final two kills to win 25-18. The second set was a close battle as neither team earned more than a five-point advantage with CMU leading 21-16. Bray tried to tie the match as she earned three kills and a Schultz ace pulled OU to within one point but it was not enough as the Chippewas earned a kill to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
In the fourth set, Oakland was unable to send the match to a deciding set as CMU combined for a .524 hitting percentage with 13 kills and only allowed six OU kills to win 25-12 and take the match 3-1.
The Golden Grizzlies will be in action this weekend as they travel to Cleveland, Ohio to participate in the Cleveland State Tournament as they will face the host Vikings, Buffalo and Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 7-8 at Woodling Gymnasium.
