SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Taylor Humm played to yet another double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 17 digs while earning herself a spot on the All-Tournament Team and teammate Cassie Pelloni recorded 10 kills as Oakland (4-3) defeated Stony Brook (3-4) in three sets on Saturday in the Candlewood Suites Invitational. OU completed a 3-1 record for the weekend with set scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-23
"We played very well tonight," commented Rob Beam. "Stony Brook competes hard and we really had to execute well to get the win. This was a great tournament for us. Our team grew in their capabilities and their understanding of what we want to accomplish tactically. I am very pleased to have gone 3-1 against such great teams."
The Golden Grizzlies got out to an early lead in the first set as Ciara Schultz served five volleys in a row for a 7-3 lead. OU would continue to dominate the set until its eventual 25-13 win. The second set began much like the first with the Golden Grizzlies taking a 7-1 lead early in the set. Oakland remained in the lead for the remainder of the set to win 25-18, improving the match score to 2-0.
The final set of the match remained much closer than its predecessors as Stony Brook battled to stay alive in the match. The Grizzlies were leading the match 23-19 on a kill from Humm when the Seawolves got the ball back and made a four-point run to tie the score 23-23. A kill by Alissa Valentine from Humm and the final kill by Allia Knight would give OU the 25-23 win and the 3-0 match victory.
Oakland will play next at Eastern Michigan University on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich. in the Convocation Center.
