ROCHESTER, Mich. - Alli Kirk recorded 28 digs while Meghan Bray had 28 kills and 20 digs as the Oakland volleyball team (8-5, 1-1 Summit) drops a five-set match to Western Illinois (6-7, 1-2 Summit) Monday night in the Athletics Center O'rena. OU lost with set scores of 25-18, 25-27, 25-21, 17-25 and 5-15.
"Western Illinois is a dangerous team when they pass the ball to the setter as they run a lot of combination plays and we did not block or defend it very well," said head coach Rob Beam. "In the fifth set we got down 3-0 and 5-1 and when you're playing a short set to 15 it is tough to come back from that."
In the fifth set, Western Illinois won 11 out of the first 13 points as they earned seven total kills in the set while forcing six OU hitting errors to win the match with a final set score of 15-5.
Oakland battled from behind early in the opening set as they came from four down to win nine out of the next ten points to take a 17-13 lead. OU recorded 17 kills in the set and earned a .394 behind Bray's six kills to win 25-18. In the second set, the Golden Grizzlies led 13-9 but Western Illinois fought back, forcing nine Oakland hitting errors. WIU only hit .086 in the set but tied the score at 24-24 as OU had seven total service errors in the set and won 27-25 to tie the match at 1-1.
Bray took control of the third set as she recorded seven kills and eight digs as OU went on a six-point run early to make the score 8-4 and another six-point run to push the score to 14-12 in the middle of the set. Schultz earned 10 of her assists in the set as Oakland recorded 19 kills to win 25-21. Western Illinois was able to tie the match and force a deciding set as they held Oakland to only 12 kills and forced seven hitting errors as WIU's Ann Miller earned six kills and Samantha Fournier added five kills to win the fourth set 25-17.
The Golden Grizzlies will be on the road this weekend as they continue Summit League play at Kansas City on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and South Dakota on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
