ROCHESTER, Mich. – Freshman Audrey Wilson had 14 kills and hit .444 while senior Brittany Dunn recorded 16 digs as the Oakland University volleyball team (10-10, 5-4 Summit) rolled past Oral Roberts (7-9, 5-4 Summit) 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-21) Saturday night at the Athletics Center O’Rena.
“This is a great follow-up to last night’s match against Centenary,” said head coach Rob Beam. “I thought we played really well and consistent. We had a great defensive effort. Our blocking was there as well as serving pressure. Our offense was on tonight, sparked by Audrey Wilson.”
In the opening set, it was all Oral Roberts for the early part of the set. The Golden Eagles went up 8-3 and held it for a 14-9 lead. Oakland came roaring back with an 8-2 blitz. Junior Ashley Nevelle dinked the ball over the net to make it 17-16, OU’s first lead since the first point of the set.
The Golden Grizzlies went on 7-2 run to lead 24-19. ORU refused to give up, scoring three straight points, making it 24-22. Wilson then bounced the ball off the block to end the set.
In the second set, Oakland came out aggressive storming to an 8-3 lead. Oral Roberts stepped it up with a 5-3 run to close the gap to three, 11-8. The Golden Grizzlies countered with a 6-3 spurt to make it 17-11.
Joana Gruber crushed the ball down the middle to close the gap to 17-12. Wilson then came flying in from the outside and blasted the ball off an ORU shoulder. That started an 8-1 run to finish the set.
In the third set, the two teams went back and forth. A kill from Jocelyn Swier made it 8-6, Oakland. OU went on a 14-7 run to lead 22-13. The Golden Eagles attempted a comeback with an 8-2 run to make it 24-22. Once again, Wilson came from the outside and found the back corner to end the match.
“I don’t even know what got into me,” said Wilson. “The setting was perfect, the passing was perfect, everything was perfect tonight. Everyone just played their best tonight.”
Sophomore Meghan Bray had nine kills, three service aces and 10 digs to complement Wilson. Nevelle sparked the offense with 30 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, sophomore Brittany Holbrook had seven total blocks while Dunn recorded her 17th straight double-digit match and 19th of the season.
For Oral Roberts, Elizabeth McVicker had 10 kills and hit .368 while Cassidy Holmes recorded 22 digs.
Oakland remains at home, Oct. 15, taking on North Dakota State. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Game Tracker will be provided at www.ougrizzlies.com.
