MACOMB, Ill. – Senior Amy Golem kept her double-digit kill streak going into six games with 10 kills, sophomore Katy Wilson had 15 assists and senior Lauren Duquette had 17 digs, but it wasn’t enough to put the Oakland University volleyball team over the edge, as they fell in three sets to Western Illinois 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-14.
“Our blocking and defense was pretty sharp,” said head coach Rob Beam. “We blocked the ball well.”
The Golden Grizzlies held the advantage in blocks throughout the match with nine, compared to only three that the Westerwinds committed. Senior Leah Dupuie held the brunt of that statistic, as she had five blocks on the night.
Duquette continued her defensive steadiness for the Golden Grizzlies this season, as she notched 17 digs for the match.
“Defensively, Lauren was competitive and consistent,” Beam said. “She is the anchor we rely on every night. Everything that she has done for us this season, she continued to do tonight. “
Oakland rallied from a 16-21 deficit in the first set to tie the score 21-21, thanks to a kill from junior Adrienne Leone. But WIU pulled out two more kills and took advantage of two errors to clinch the first set.
The Golden Grizzlies remained in contention in the second set, sitting within three, 19-22, but just could not get a stop on the ensuing three point rally from WIU to take the set.
OU will head back to the friendly confines of the O’Rena for the next three matches, starting with a tilt against IPFW on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
