ROCHESTER, Mich. - Alli Kirk finished with a match-high 25 digs and Brittany Holbrook recorded 13 kills and seven blocks as the Oakland volleyball team (13-10, 6-5) defeated Kansas City (14-10, 7-5) in straight sets Saturday night in the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies won with set score of 25-21, 25-19 and 27-25.
"I am proud of the team as they rebounded well from last night," said head coach Rob Beam. "They put forth a really resilient effort. We won some really big points as it was a group effort and it requires a lot of will and our team showed that tonight."
Meghan Bray earned her 16th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs while Taylor Humm added 13 digs and seven kills. Alissa Valentine recorded a team-high 17 assists and Ciara Schultz added 16 assists with two service aces.
The Kangaroos came out hot early on in the first set grabbing a 13-7 lead but OU would win 10 out of the next 12 points, including eight in a row, led by four kills by Bray to take the opening set 25-21. In the second set, UMKC would once again jump out early, leading by as many as three, but Oakland would win 12 out of the next 14 points behind a stellar defensive effort that held the Kangaroos to only a .060 hitting percentage in the set to take a 2-0 advantage with a 25-19 set win.
Oakland would dominate the opening of the third set, leading 10-3 behind two kills each by Holbrook and Humm. Kansas City continued to battle however, as they tied the match late at 24-24. The Golden Grizzlies would not be denied the sweep as Holbrook earned two kills and an UMKC hitting error would win the match with a 27-25 set win.
The Golden Grizzlies will hit the road next weekend for a pair of Summit League matches as they face South Dakota State in Frost Arena on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and North Dakota State at Benston Bunker Fieldhouse on Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
