“This is the most competitive schedule that we have ever put together," said Beam. "With five consecutive top-45 RPI matches, as well as high-quality mid-major teams in their gyms, we will be very well prepared for Horizon League play.
Additionally, among these matches we are able to bring LSU and Colorado State, two perennial NCAA Sweet 16 contenders, to the O’rena as a showcase event for collegiate volleyball in Metro Detroit. I am very excited about the opportunities that this schedule affords our team, as well as the Oakland brand on the national stage.”
Oakland will open the season with a four-team tournament at Fort Wayne beginning Aug. 24, then will hit the road for a three-match road trip to Bowling Green, Notre Dame and Purdue. The Golden Grizzlies will host their home opener Friday, Sept. 7 against Colorado State and then welcome LSU to the O'rena on Sept. 8. The Black and Gold will begin Horizon League play on Sept. 22 against Youngstown State.
The 2017 season saw Oakland go 17-12 overall and 12-4 in Horizon League play, finishing in second-place in the regular season.
